Eleven people have been convicted following their involvement in a 'Crash for Cash' scam in Derby
13 April 2018
Between 2011 and 2013 Shazad Ali, along with a number of other gang members made personal injury and vehicle damage claims to a firm of solicitors in Alvaston costing more than £250,000. On 12 April 2018, five people pleaded guilty and a further five were found guilty of conspiracy to defraud, following two trials at Derby Crown Court.
Jason Potter, Head of Investigations at the IFB said: “It’s clear that Shazad Ali was the leader of this a highly organised gang, that was solely motivated by greed. Insurance fraud scams like this might seem like victimless crimes, but we estimate crash for cash costs the industry £336m per year and ultimately it is premium-paying motorists who foot the bill. Insurance fraud is a serious crime and one that will not go unpunished, so we’re pleased that this long and complex investigation has resulted in guilty verdicts”
